about

"The Breakers" bookends Mighty Brother's upcoming concept album Azimuth which transports the classic story of the hero myth into the modern day. Written beneath the pall of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the album deals with concepts of loss, normalcy, and rebirth. In "The Breakers," founding member Ari Kirkman explores their lived experience as a non-binary/trans-identifying person confronting questions of gender, love, and authenticity. The accompanying music video was produced by an all trans and NB-identified team living in Philadelphia, PA, each sharing a visual expression of trans joy to counteract the historically negative representations of trans people in popular media. The video celebrates non-binary and trans identity and joy.

lyrics

Opalescent Mother
Cradled by the Sea
I was not a pearl but a
Grain of sand you carried

Was to be a son
A brother and a man
Layers of accretion I don’t understand

Some could not abide this
I could not remain
And so I go into the land I am a stranger

All my doors are open
Swallowed by the sound
Two thousand feet above the breakers
I am climbing down

Take the spoon in hand and
Hollow out the womb
Love was not forbidden but the
Sweetest fruit

Wrest me from the garden
Sword at back ablaze
Heat was rippling off the pavement
Came in waves and waves

Humming hallelujah
Naked to my name
Folding all my temporal parts
I am remade

All my doors are open
Swallowed by the sound
Two thousand feet above the breakers
I am climbing
Two thousand feet above the breakers
I am climbing
Two thousand feet above the breakers
I am climbing down
